Match Report

Barnsley Ladies 0-0 Chorley Ladies - Match Report – 10th September 2017

Sherry Pearson started in goal with Kim Sykes, Janet Mitchell, Saskia Bowes and Ruth Harrison making the back 4. Just in front was the midfield 3 of Karis Harrison, Laura Walker and Kathy Bonner. Whilst Lisa Topping, Vicky Coope and Maddy Cullin completed the attack.

Chorley travelled away to Barnsley to face a well-organised opposition who were clearly well coached and used to playing on their artificial surface. The conditions were terrible with a very strong wind sweeping across the pitch. The game started in a lively fashion and both sides were playing at a high intensity. Walker, Bonner and K.Harrison were dominating the midfield area and sliding as a screen in front of the back four really effectively.

Cullin and Sykes were linking up really well on the right hand side and Cullin carved out a couple of good chances. One of these was a whipped in cross for Coope who controlled the ball brilliantly before turning and shooting. The goalkeeper making a very good save to get down to it. The game didn’t slow down and it was very end to end. Pearson was claiming all things thrown at her in goal and distributing it to the back four whenever possible.

Topping was causing havoc on the left hand side as she had the beating of their right back on a few occasions, winning Chorley a few corners as well as shooting opportunities which were narrowly missed. Barnsley did create a couple of chances but were restricted to long shots from outside of the area which barely troubled Pearson.

In the second half, Barnsley became much more fluent and pinned Chorley back. Good discipline from the Chorley midfield and defence meant that they were kept at bay for most of the game. The one opportunity that Barnsley managed to get in behind, Pearson sent the striker wide and Mitchell was on hand to sweep up the danger. K. Harrison, R. Harrison and Coope were replaced by Wood, Yeoman and Smith. These changes helped Chorley to add pace up front and counter on the break. A couple of times Smith beat her opponent and fired in a cross that Wood almost latched onto.

All in all, a well-deserved point for Chorley who showed great character and determination to cope with the pressure that Barnsley piled on. The ladies take a break from league action to take part in two cup competitions over the coming 2 weeks.
